Why is my measured latency half as large as what the manufacturer specifies?

The measured latency may appear lower, especially if your system is running in "dual-channel mode".

In dual-channel mode, two memory channels share the work, sending data over two paths simultaneously. This effectively halves the time needed to transfer data compared to a single-channel system.

3. The deviations in the latency time:
4. CCAS Latency (CL) conversion in nanoseconds DDR 3, 4, 5:
5. CAS Latency (CL) conversion in nanoseconds

Info:

The access time is not included in the overall rating as it influences the other four values!

1.) Why are lower values better?

Lower latency means your memory responds to requests faster. This is especially beneficial for applications that require fast data access, such as gaming, video editing, or 3D rendering.

2.) Latency example for RAM modules:

If a RAM module operates with a latency of 40 nanoseconds
(ns) in single-channel mode, you can theoretically measure a latency of 20 ns
in dual-channel mode because both channels share the work.

3.) The deviations in the latency time:

There are a few factors that can affect the actual latency:

- System-related variations
Certain hardware components can cause slightly increased or decreased latency, such as the memory controller or the clock speed of the RAM.

- Power saving mode
When your laptop or PC is in power saving mode, the performance of the components can be reduced, which can lead to slightly increased latency.

It is important to make sure the computer is running in high performance mode when measuring latency to get accurate results.

4.) CCAS Latency (CL) conversion in nanoseconds DDR 3, 4, 5:

Here are the CL (CAS Latency) values and their conversions in nanoseconds for DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 RAM:

The conversion of CL to nanoseconds depends on the frequency of the RAM. The formula to calculate latency in nanoseconds is:

Latency (ns)= CL / RAM Clock Rate (MT/s) * 2000
Where

the clock rate is given in megatransfers per second (MT/s), where the effective clock rate for DDR RAM is twice the actual clock rate.

5.) CAS Latency (CL) conversion in nanoseconds

1. DDR3 (1600 MT/s)

- CL11: Latency = 11 / 1600 × 2000 = 13.75 ns

- CL14: Latency = 14 / 1600 × 2000 = 17.50 ns

2. DDR4 (2400 MT/s)

- CL11: Latency = 11 / 2400 × 2000 = 9.17 ns

- CL14: Latency = 14 / 2400 × 2000 = 11.67 ns

3. DDR5 (4800 MT/s)

- CL11: Latency = 11 / 4800 × 2000 = 4.58 ns

- CL14: Latency = 14 / 4800 × 2000 = 5.83 ns

You should be able to use this representation without any problems!

6.) Summary Latency in Nanoseconds DDR 3, 4, 5:

RAM typeCLclock rate (MT/s)Latency (ns)
DDR3 CL11 1600 13.75
DDR3 CL14 1600 17.50
DDR4 CL11 2400 9.17
DDR4 CL14 2400 11.67
DDR5 CL11 4800 4.58
DDR5 CL14 4800 5.83

These values may vary slightly depending on the specific RAM modules and their configuration.
