Why do modern CPUs consume so much power?

Modern processors are extremely powerful, but this power comes at a price in the form of high energy consumption. Modern processors require a lot of energy, which has several reasons:

1. Higher clock speeds and performance
2. More cores and threads
3. High transistor density
4. Dynamic adjustment (boost technologies)
5. Additional features & AI acceleration
6. Inefficiencies in voltage conversion & heat loss

1.) Higher clock speeds and performance

- CPUs reach clock speeds of 4-6 GHz, which requires more power.

- Higher clock speeds require more voltage, which increases consumption exponentially.

2.) More cores and threads

- Processors often have 8, 16 or more cores, which increases power requirements.

- Each core requires its own power and voltage supply.

3.) High transistor density

- Billions of transistors generate more heat and energy consumption.

- Smaller manufacturing processes (e.g. 3 nm) lower the voltage, but the overall load remains high.

4.) Dynamic adaptation (boost technologies)

- Intel Turbo Boost & AMD Precision Boost drive CPUs to maximum performance in the short term.

- This leads to a significant, short-term increase in consumption.

5.) Additional features & AI acceleration

- Modern CPUs integrate AI engines, AVX512, ray tracing and more, which requires additional power.

6.) Inefficiencies in voltage conversion & heat loss

- Not all energy is used efficiently - much is converted into heat.

- Voltage converters on motherboards & CPUs also have losses.

💡 Tips for reducing consumption:

- Efficient cooling (e.g. water cooling) optimizes performance.

- Power saving modes & undervolting reduce consumption.

- ARM-based CPUs (e.g. Apple M-series) show that more efficient architectures require less power.
