Can I move the Steam folder to an external drive?


You can move the Steam folder to an external drive by either moving the entire Steam installation folder or just moving your Steam games library to the external drive. Here are the two methods:






1. Method 1: Move the entire Steam folder
2. Method 2: Move only the Steam games library
3. Important notes






1.) Method 1: Move the entire Steam folder



If you want to move Steam and all games to the external drive:

1. Quit Steam completely (right click on the Steam icon in the taskbar > Quit).

2. Navigate to the current Steam folder

Default path:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam
3. Cut the entire "Steam" folder (right click > cut).

4. Paste the folder on the external drive
Example: `E:\Steam`

5. Start Steam with the new location

- Double click on `Steam.exe` in the new location.

- If Steam asks for a repair, confirm it.

If you have a shortcut on the desktop, you should adjust the path.





2.) Method 2: Move only the Steam game library



If you only want to move your games to the external drive but keep Steam on the main hard drive:

Step 1: Create a new Steam library directory



1. Open Steam and go to
Steam > Settings > Storage .

2. Click Manage Storage Folders .

3. Select "+" (Add New Folder) and choose your external drive (e.g. `E:\SteamLibrary`).

4. Confirm with OK .

Step 2: Move games to the external drive



1. In Steam, go to Library .

2. Right-click on an installed game and select Properties .

3. Switch to the Installed Files tab and select Move Installation Folder .

4. Select the external drive as the destination and click Move .

Repeat the process for all the games you want to move.




3.) Important information




- The external drive should always be connected when you start Steam, otherwise errors may occur.

- USB SSD recommended : If you want to play games on the external drive, an SSD with USB 3.0 or better is ideal for fast loading times.

- If Steam does not start after moving, you can run the file `Steam.exe` in the new directory or download Steam again.
