16 nuclear power plants for gaming and gaming fun!?

The daily power consumption of all gaming PCs worldwide corresponds to the energy production of about 16 nuclear power plants, each with an output of 1 GW.

A rough estimate.

1. Assumptions about the power consumption of an average gaming PC:
2. Average daily playing time per player:
3. Number of gamers worldwide:
4. Calculating global electricity consumption:
5. How many nuclear power plants do we need?
6. Conclusion:

1.) Assumptions about the power consumption of an average gaming PC:

- A typical gaming PC with a modern GPU (e.g. RTX 4070/4080 or RX 7800 XT) consumes 300-600 watts under load .

- With a monitor and peripherals, we get about 500 watts (0.5 kW) on average.

2.) Average daily playing time per player:

- Studies show that gamers worldwide spend an average of 2-3 hours per day playing games.

- We assume 2.5 hours (0.104 days) per player.

3.) Number of gamers worldwide:

- It is estimated that there are over 3 billion gamers worldwide , but not all of them play on gaming PCs.

- Let's assume that 10% (300 million) play on a gaming PC.

4.) Calculation of global electricity consumption:

Energy consumption per gamer per day:

0.5 kW × 2.5 hours = 1.25 kWh

Total consumption of all PC gamers worldwide per day:

1.25 kWh × 300,000,000 = 375,000,000 kWh =375 GWh

5.) How many nuclear power plants do we need?

- A modern nuclear power plant produces about 1–1.5 GW of electrical power.

- In 24 hours, a 1 GW power plant produces 24 GWh of electricity.

Number of nuclear power plants required:

24 GWh/KW / 375 GWh = 16 nuclear power plants

6.) Conclusion:

Gaming PCs worldwide consume around 375 GWh of electricity per day, which is equivalent to the daily production of around 16 nuclear power plants with 1 GW each.

Of course, these are rough estimates, as not every PC needs the same amount of electricity and not all gamers play every day. But the order of magnitude should be correct. 😊
