❓ I want to understand the desktop directory on Windows!

The Desktop directory is a special folder in Windows responsible for the desktop's appearance. Everything stored in this folder—files, folders, or shortcuts—appears directly on the desktop's workspace.

►►  Where is the Desktop directory on Windows 11 and 12?

1. Desktop directory locations
2. Quickly open the Desktop folder
3. Change the location
4. Things to keep in mind

1.) 🔹 Desktop directory locations

There are two important desktop folders :

1. Personal Desktop

* Path: `C:\Users\<username>\Desktop`
* Contains only the contents of the logged-in user's desktop. Each user has their own personal desktop folder.

2. Public Desktop

* Path: `C:\Users\Public\Desktop`
* All files and shortcuts located here are displayed on the desktops of all users .
* Typical example: When a program creates a shortcut for all users.

2.) 🔹 How to quickly open the Desktop folder

* Press Windows key + R and enter:

* `%userprofile%\Desktop` → your personal desktop
* `%public%\Desktop` → public desktop * Or enter the path directly
in MS Explorer (File Explorer) .

3.) 🔹 Change storage location

You can move the location of your Desktop folder:

1. Right-click on Desktop in File Explorer.
2. Open Properties .
3.
Select the Location tab
. 4. Click Move to specify a new destination (e.g., a different partition or a network drive).

This is useful if you want to back up your desktop files centrally or access them from multiple devices.

4.) 🔹 Things you should consider

* The desktop reloads every time you log in → too many files or shortcuts can slow down the login process .
* Organization quickly becomes cluttered if the desktop is used as a "storage place for everything".
* Files are physically located in folders – the desktop is just a graphical representation of them.
* When backing up, you must explicitly include the desktop folder if you don't want to lose any data.

👉 In summary:
The Windows desktop is not a "special storage" but simply the surface of the Desktop folder . Depending on the user context, Windows distinguishes between the personal and the public desktop.
