What is SmartScreen?
All MS Windows 10, 8.1 and Microsoft's servers contain a so-called SmartScreen, a function that should protect your PC!
The SmartScreen should protect the Windows PC from downloaded malware and harmful websites, so the SmartScreen for Windows has been added and has also been improved on Windows 10 and MS Server 2019. ►► SmartScreen can be deactivated and activated!
1.) How does the SmartScreen work?
When you download an application or file, the SmartScreen Filter compares it against a Microsoft database. If the file has already been recognized on another computer and is classified as safe, for example when you download the installation program for Chrome, Q-Dir, iTunes, ... etc., it can be executed by SmartScreen. If it has been seen before and is known to be dangerous malware, SmartScreen will block it. If it hasn't been seen before and Windows isn't sure if it's safe, Windows will prevent an app or desktop program from starting and warn you that doing so is potentially dangerous. However, you can bypass this warning.
2.) Am I on the safe side with the SmartScreen?
You are more protected, but there is no guarantee of 100% security, there are also cases where all security on the system is bypassed by viruses, Trojans and / or malware and the system is infected. Careful handling of data is important and visits to dubious websites always pose a great risk!
SmartScreen is a useful security feature that you can use to protect your PC from malware. Even if you have other security software installed, SmartScreen can protect you from something that your antivirus might miss. It only uses a small amount of Windows system resources anyway .
3.) Can SmartScreen.exe also be a virus?
Yes, there have been reports of malware impersonating the SmartScreen or smartscreen.exe process. This process is part of Windows 10 and protects your PC from malware, although no security solution is perfect. However, if you are concerned that malware may be running on your system, it's always a good idea to run a scan with your favorite antivirus to make sure everything is okay.
