How do I optimize VHD and VHDX files with PowerShell?

The simple and fast optimization of VHD and VHDX files with simple PowerShell commands on MS Windows 11, 10, ... or MS Server OS is very popular!




The "Optimize-VHD" command is popularly used to optimize the disk space used by dynamic virtual hard disk files. When this PowerShell command is run, it compresses the virtual file! And the disk space required by the virtual disk is less!

1.) Optimizing the virtual hard disk VHD!

Simply optimizing the VHD: 


Optimize-VHD -Path 'D:\Virtual Hard Disks\1.vhd'


Just the Optimize-VHD command and the full path to the virtual disk 

2.) What can I expect from optimizing the VHD?

Not much! The VHD is slightly optimized, the gain in storage space is not worth mentioning!  

You can achieve more with the "Convert-VHD" when converting from vhd to vhdx

Example:

Convert-VHD -Path 'D:\Virtual Hard Disks\1.vhd'  -DestinationPath 'D:\Virtual Hard Disks\1.vhdx'
