My external USB hard drive doesn't work on the USB HUB, why?

Yes, I am aware of the problem with the hard drive on the USB HUB, it is due to the limitations of the USB technology and the cable length.

The following things should be observed!
A hard drive and two to four other USB sticks can be connected to a HUB with a short cable (30 centimeters)!

With longer cables, connecting a hard disk only works if it has its own power supply, i.e. its own power supply unit!

Or:   You have a USB HUB that also has its own power supply!

Here are the amazon.de links to see the pictures:

... passive USB HUB

PS: We also speak of passive and active USB HUB

1.) A little information about USB-HUB and how it works!

The USB HUB has an integrated chip that enables multiple devices to be connected to one port; it should be noted that the individual devices also share the maximum transfer rate to the PC.
The passive hub uses the power supply from the PC and the active USB HUB has its own power supply via a power supply unit. Some can be operated as an active or passive hub.

2.) What should I consider when buying an active USB HUB?

Actually the most important point is that the power supply is correct, especially with a fast USB 3 this also has an influence on the speed. Add the number of watts of devices to be connected to the hub, the power supply should be a little higher than the wattage of all USB devices!
