What is a device driver?

A driver, often referred to as an operating system device driver, enables communication between the PC and the device!

Often referred to as a hardware driver, it is a package ( zip folder ) of files that enable one or more hardware devices to communicate with the computer's operating system. Without device drivers, the computer cannot properly exchange data and information with the corresponding hardware devices, such as a printer, mouse, plotter , ... sending and receiving data is impossible.

1.) Do all devices need a driver?

Yes! Hardware devices that are used by the operating system or have features required by the operating system need drivers. Hardware devices and peripherals  require drivers and are always required, such as: controller, network card, printer , scanner, sound card,
USB sticks , graphics card , ..., etc. just to name a few!

2.) What happens if no device driver is installed?

Fortunately, today's operating systems have many drivers that allow the corresponding hardware to work with basic functionality without the need for original drivers or software. However, if this device has features unknown to the operating system, it will not function to its full extent or at full performance without original drivers.

You can connect a keyboard or graphics card to a computer as a small example and it usually works right away. However, if this keyboard has special keys or the graphics card has special functions, these will only work if the original drivers are installed!

3.) More tips and links to device drivers!

PS: Almost all hardware manufacturers provide free device drivers as software for their devices and can be found directly on the company's website. Companies that are no longer in business because of bankruptcy, or for products that are no longer supported by the manufacturer, others may offer free device drivers. In this situation, you should be careful with third-party providers!
